Restoring Power to the Body of Christ

A few days ago, we were at my youngest son’s baseball practice. It was cold, in April, in south Alabama. Miserable to say the least! But, at the end of the practice, the coach was giving the team a little pep talk and I had the pleasure of overhearing what he was saying. “Do the little things the right way” he said, “Stay focused”, and then, in an attempt to drive home the point, he asked, “Who is your role model? Do y’all have a role model? Do you know what that is?” I could hear some of the boys responding. “Batman” one of them blurted out. “Superman.” Another little boy giggled, some said, “God”, to which the coach said, “He’s all of our role model.” A few more shouted some names of sports figures, one said, “My dad.” I listened intently as these young athletes were responding and getting excited. Then I thought, what is it about a superhero that makes little boys look up to them? It’s their power. They have superpowers of some sort. They can do the impossible, overcome anything, achieve the unthinkable, flying high, fast, and saving the world every time. Think about some of the heroes of our faith. I am sure there are some household names that come up when you think of them now, what made them different than the rest?

More than ever we need Christians who understand the true power they possess. It’s not about getting rich, good jobs, big homes, nice cars, or even knowing Jesus so we can be healed. It’s knowing Him for who He is. When we live in obedience to His word, we are aligned to walk in the power of His word, a power that supersedes any power in this life. This is not just any power, it is dynamic, dynamite, explosive power. The biblical term is dunamis. Dunamis is not just any power; the word often refers to miraculous power (such as in Matthew 7:22; 11:21, 23; Mark 5:30; Luke 5:17; 9:1; 10:13; and Acts 8:13). Dunamis can also refer to “moral power and excellence of soul,” according to Thayer’s Greek Lexicon (Reference). When we understand the source of the power is Christ in us, and that we have the tools necessary to achieve the purpose He created us for, we will then realize it is from a position of victory we pray, not praying for victory. I think we’ve been dumbed down so much by being stuck on the basics of not sinning and just getting to heaven that we’ve missed out on living lives to the fullest. This miraculous power, this dynamite power is available for the modern believer. Dunamis power is not a result of God’s presence, it is His nature, it is who He is. He is the power source, He gives off the power, He radiates power, and by His nature, with His presence in our lives, we are conduits of that power in our world.

We will never experience the fullness of this power until we get past the biblical bottle and mature as believers in Christ. It’s time to step into the fullness of what God has available for us. This is not some perverted power as you may have seen in the past. This is a power that results from knowing the Word of God, from intimate relationship with Christ, from time of prayer, consistent worship, this is power that will change the world we live in when practiced.

We can access the best God has for us when we stir up a hunger and an appetite for His presence, for His word, and for the things of heaven, and lose our desire for the things of this world. Cut off the chains that are binding you from pursuing Him relentlessly and with fervency. Break away from the things that are holding you back from walking in the fullness of who He has declared you to be. This is a call to maturity. This is a call to restore the power of Christ in our lives by knowing Him, really knowing Him, and declaring His truths over our lives and circumstances. Yes, miracles do happen. Yes, we have access to God’s power, but only through relationship with His only Son, Jesus. Today, pursue the source of all power, not riches or things, and walk in the freedom of knowing you are fully equipped for victorious living.

Heavenly Father, Thank you for giving me access to the dunamis power which only you give. I recognize the only path to living a life of victory and abundance is found through relationship with your son, Jesus, but I choose to pursue you for who you are, for what you have done for my salvation, not for what you can give me. I love you, God, I love you more than life, and I ask you to stir a hunger in my heart for the things of Your word, stir an appetite in me for Your presence that nothing else will satisfy. Show me the path to a closer, more intimate relationship with you and restore the power of Your presence in my life. Amen
